Artist
The series of works I am currently working on is based on a consideration of the materials and processes of pottery, and considers pottery as a "memory medium", observing second-hand clothing and everyday items, and trying to memorise the signs of their former owners and the traces of life of people living in the present day in the pottery.
Using the rich plasticity of clay, he observes the wrinkles of second-hand clothing and carves them into the soft clay. The soft clay hardens during the firing process and stubbornly retains the image it has been given, in other words, it has the property of "remembering". It is a sensation that my time is mixed with the existence of the people who would certainly have worn these clothes. The daily necessities represented by the pottery resonate with our own existence and become a memory medium for the human imagination, reflecting the absolute loneliness and sorrow of people living today as individuals.

Gallery

We aim to be a gallery where not only art professionals but also the general visitors can enjoy the exhibitions and at the same time purchase high quality works.
I lived in France from 1992 to 1999. During this time I travelled around Europe, North and Central America, Australia, Africa and Asia. I also spent a year in Paris in 2003, learning how to run an art gallery. While there, I got to know many people involved in the art world and became aware of two main issues.
The first is the question of how cultural globalisation can coexist with the unique attractions of each region. The other issue is the lack of progress in arts management in Japan compared to Europe and the US.
At Gallery OUT of PLACE, we focus on these two key issues in our management of the gallery. We hope to introduce up-and-coming artists and talented artists expressing deep philosophies and ideas, which will have a strong impact on the viewer's mind and bring about a rich experience.
For twelve years from January 2009 to April 2021, Gallery OUT of PLACE TOKIO was established in Hiroo (in 3331ArtsChiyoda from 2014) as a Tokyo branch to present the current state of contemporary art in the Tokyo metropolitan area. From May 2021, we closed our Tokyo branch and moved our base to Nara. As we continue to organise exhibitions and events, we hope that OUT of PLACE will be a place where different cultures and personalities can interact and fuse, and where new and universal expressions can be born.
The name of the gallery, OUT of PLACE, is derived from Edward Said's autobiography of the same name. We would like to emulate Said's idea that those who have no sense of belonging anywhere are the ones who can create new paths and new values.
