Artist
Along with Andy Warhol and others, he is one of the most famous Pop Art painters. He is famous for his works in which he enlarged a single frame of a popular newspaper comic strip onto canvas, including the dots of the printing ink. The simple but intense lines and simplified colors of cartoons are expressed in his oil paintings.
Lichtenstein's works, which have become synonymous with enlarged comic book panels, appeared in the early 1960s. When he drew Mickey Mouse cartoons for his own children, he realized that cartoons had a more powerful impact and expressiveness than traditional painting as so-called art. In his works, everything is represented as a flat surface surrounded by thick outlines, colors are generally solid colors of the three primary colors, and shading is expressed by the size and density of dots. It can be said that his originality lies in the fact that he found beauty in such common and conventional expressions.
His use of color, limited to the three primary colors of red, yellow, and blue, and black and white, is also common to the modernist abstract painter Piet Mondrian, and the flatness of his cartoons is in some ways a continuation of Abstract Expressionism, which also emphasized flatness.
